Waste Tires have become a big problem not only in Pennsylvania but around the world as well. Besides polluting the countryside, waste tires occupy valuable land that could be used more productively. Waste tires also pose a serious health risk when they lay around with water in them, as they are a breeding ground and home to mosquitoes which carry the West Nile Virus.

SOURCE REDUCTION IS THE KEY!

Susquehanna County Recycling Center has in the past periodically conducted Waste Tire Clean-up Programs.  These programs are designed to clean up our countryside via collection of old inherited waste tire piles and roadside waste tire litter.   These clean up programs are largely provided through grant funding.

We, as a community, need to be proactive on disposing our tires and other HHW materials.  Source reduction is the key to keeping America beautiful and minimizing HHW pollution.  The following information is designed to help you properly dispose of your Waste Tires.

DEP explains how you can help in the fight to keep waste tires from polluting Pennsylvania's countryside.

When you purchase new tires, leave your used tires right here with the retailer-and here’s why!

bulletBy leaving your used tires with the retailer, you give them another chance. In Pennsylvania, used tires have three uses:
bulletenergy recovery in cement kilns and other fuel-burning plants;
bulletcivil engineering applications, such as crumb-rubber modified asphalt;
bulletand the manufacturing of new products.
bulletPennsylvania companies turn used tires into retread or remanufactured tires, buckets, pavers, shoes, mouse pads, dustpans and lots of other great new products.
bulletDon’t toss your tires! Leave them with the retailer where they can be recycled. Don’t leave used tires on the side of the road or in your backyard where they will turn into unsightly piles and could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Instead, help protect the environment and beautify your community by leaving used tires with the retailer. Make your neighborhood a better place.
bulletWhatever you do, don’t toss those tires-leave them with the retailer. You never know what they may turn into!
